Introduction
The direct equivalent of ChatGPT Business, formerly ChatGPT Team, on Anthropic’s side is broadly Claude Team.
Both are intended for teams and businesses rather than individual consumer use, and both provide organisational controls that are not available in the same way on individual subscriptions such as ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro.
However, they should not be treated as identical from a security or compliance perspective.
Their product structures are broadly comparable, but the detailed contractual terms, certification scope, administrative controls, data handling, retention options and enterprise features differ.
For that reason, a business should assess the exact product, configuration and use case rather than relying only on the plan name.

Are ChatGPT Business and Claude Team equivalent?
Broadly, yes.
Claude Team is the most sensible product-to-product comparison with ChatGPT Business.
Both are designed as organisational workspaces rather than purely individual subscriptions.
Both provide centralised administration and billing, and both offer business-focused data handling arrangements.
However, “equivalent” should not be interpreted as meaning that every security, contractual or compliance feature is identical.
The appropriate comparison is:
ChatGPT Business ≈ Claude Team
rather than:
ChatGPT Business = Claude Team in every respect.
Data training and privacy
One of the most important similarities is the treatment of business data.
OpenAI states that ChatGPT Business workspace inputs and outputs are not used for general model training by default.
Anthropic similarly treats Claude Team as part of its commercial offering and states that commercial inputs and outputs are not used for general model training by default.
This is an important distinction from individual consumer subscriptions.
However, absolute statements such as “your data is never used for training under any circumstances” should be avoided.
Providers may have specific exceptions, such as voluntarily submitted feedback, express opt-in arrangements or other product-specific provisions.
The more accurate statement is:
“Business workspace data is not used for general model training by default, subject to the provider’s current terms and any specific exceptions.”
ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro
ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are individual subscriptions rather than centrally managed business workspaces.
That does not automatically mean that they are insecure or that they cannot ever be used for work.
The more important distinction is organisational governance.
Individual subscriptions generally give a business less central control over:
- user provisioning
- deprovisioning
- billing
- identity management
- data-use settings
- policy enforcement
- organisational oversight
For ChatGPT personal workspaces, users can control whether their data is used to improve models through account settings.
Anthropic also provides model-improvement privacy settings for its consumer Claude products.
This means that a business relying on individual subscriptions may depend more heavily on individual employees configuring their accounts correctly.
By contrast, a business workspace provides a more consistent organisational framework.
Security and compliance
It is too simplistic to say that ChatGPT Business and Claude Team are completely equivalent for security and compliance.
Both offer substantial business-oriented security measures.
Both providers publish information about areas such as:
- encryption
- access controls
- security governance
- independent assurance
- privacy
- incident management
- organisational security practices
However, certification scope matters.
A provider may hold a certification such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001 without that automatically meaning every product, feature or configuration falls within exactly the same certification scope.
For that reason, a procurement or compliance review should look at:
- the relevant Trust Center
- the actual audit or certification scope
- the specific product
- the organisation’s own requirements
- any contractual requirements imposed by customers
Do not treat a simple “Yes / No” certification table as sufficient evidence of compliance.
Admin controls
ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both provide central organisational controls that are not available in the same way on individual accounts.
These include features such as:
- central billing
- user administration
- workspace management
- identity controls
- Single Sign-On
However, administrators should not assume that these plans provide unrestricted visibility into every user conversation or item of workspace content.
Administrative visibility and logging capabilities can differ between Business, Team and Enterprise tiers.
The specific admin permissions should therefore be checked against the provider’s current documentation.
Enterprise differences
The biggest jump in governance and compliance capability generally comes when moving from the mid-tier business workspace to the Enterprise tier.
Enterprise plans commonly add capabilities such as:
- SCIM
- deeper audit logging
- advanced role-based access controls
- custom retention policies
- more advanced identity management
- additional analytics
- additional security controls
- compliance APIs
- network-level controls
- IP allowlisting
- enterprise key management
These features can matter significantly for larger organisations, regulated businesses and companies with more sophisticated internal security requirements.
Enterprise should therefore not be viewed as simply a higher-usage version of Business or Team.
It is often a materially different governance and control tier.
Data retention
Data retention is an important area to check carefully.
Businesses may have:
- contractual retention requirements
- customer confidentiality obligations
- data deletion requirements
- internal information governance policies
- regulatory requirements
Custom retention controls are generally more likely to be available at Enterprise level than on the standard Business or Team plans.
A business should therefore check the actual retention and deletion rules applying to the specific plan it is considering.
Data residency
Data residency can also be relevant.
The availability of regional storage or processing options may vary by product, plan and customer eligibility.
Businesses should not assume that selecting a business plan automatically means all data remains within the UK or EEA.
Where data residency matters, the business should confirm:
- storage location
- processing location
- any exceptions
- subprocessors
- international transfers
- applicable contractual transfer mechanisms
UK GDPR
A product should not be described as simply “UK GDPR compliant” merely because the provider has strong security controls or recognised certifications.
UK GDPR compliance depends on how the business uses the product.
Relevant questions include:
- What personal data is being entered?
- Is special category data involved?
- Is confidential customer information involved?
- What is the lawful basis?
- Is the provider acting as processor?
- What contractual documentation applies?
- What subprocessors are used?
- Are international transfers involved?
- What retention period applies?
- Can data subject rights be supported?
- Does the business have appropriate policies and controls?
The provider’s security and contractual framework is therefore only one part of the compliance assessment.
HIPAA and regulated data
Businesses should be particularly careful where they process regulated or highly sensitive data.
A provider being technically capable of supporting a regulated environment does not mean that every subscription tier automatically satisfies those requirements.
For healthcare data, for example, the availability of a Business Associate Agreement and the specific eligible product matter.
The same principle applies to other regulated sectors.
Do not rely only on marketing phrases such as:
- enterprise-ready
- secure
- compliant
- HIPAA-ready
Always check the actual contractual and technical scope.
Is there a drop when moving to Plus or Pro?
There is a meaningful reduction in organisational governance when moving from:
ChatGPT Business → ChatGPT Plus / Pro
or:
Claude Team → Claude Pro / Max
However, this should not be described simply as a drop from “secure” to “insecure”.
The key difference is that the business loses organisational controls and relies more heavily on individual user behaviour and account settings.
For a business handling confidential company or client information, that distinction can be important.
A useful way to think about the hierarchy is:
Individual subscriptions
- ChatGPT Plus / Pro
- Claude Pro / Max
Suitable for individual users, but with limited organisational governance.
Business workspaces
- ChatGPT Business
- Claude Team
Suitable for organisations that want central administration, business-oriented data treatment and workspace controls.
Enterprise
- ChatGPT Enterprise
- Claude Enterprise
Adds more sophisticated identity, logging, retention, audit and compliance controls.
Practical view for UK businesses
For many SMEs, ChatGPT Business and Claude Team are the natural starting points when moving from informal employee use of individual AI accounts to a managed organisational AI environment.
The most important practical benefits
- central administration
- consistent business data treatment
- organisational identity controls
- easier employee onboarding and removal
- central billing
- clearer business governance
However, whether either product is suitable depends on what information employees will enter into it.
Before rollout, a business should consider
- client confidentiality
- trade secrets
- personal data
- special category data
- contractual restrictions
- customer requirements
- retention
- internal AI policies
- employee training
- acceptable use controls
- procurement requirements
Conclusion
Claude Team is broadly the Anthropic equivalent of ChatGPT Business.
They are similar in product positioning and both provide a significantly more business-oriented environment than individual subscriptions.
However, they are not identical.
Businesses should avoid treating security certifications, privacy statements or enterprise marketing claims as automatic evidence that a product is suitable for their particular use case.
For most organisations, the important question is not simply:
“Is Claude Team as secure as ChatGPT Business?”
It is:
“Does this specific product, configuration and contractual framework meet our organisation’s actual requirements?”
The answer depends on the facts.
